Short-Term Storage in Jacksonville & Newport, NC: Make Room for Holiday Guests

A practical guest-room reset before Thanksgiving

The guest bed is covered in boxes, the spare chair is blocking the closet, and family will be here for Thanksgiving. You don't have to clear out the whole house. Start with the room your guests will actually use, then decide what can move out until the visit is over.
The short answer: A month-to-month storage unit can make sense when spare furniture and boxes need to be out of the house for several weeks. Measure what you're moving, choose a facility you can get to easily, and confirm billing and move-out terms before renting.
Clear the guest room first
Keep the bed, a lamp, and somewhere for guests to set a suitcase. Clear a path from the door to the bed and leave a few hangers in the closet. Then sort everything else into three groups:
- Keep at home: Extra linens, folding chairs you’ll use at dinner, and anything you’ll need while guests are there.
- Move temporarily: A spare desk, hobby supplies, boxed books, or furniture you plan to bring back after the visit.
- Donate or sell: Things you no longer want. There’s no reason to rent space for items you’ve already decided to let go.
If you're also swapping out beach gear or pulling decorations from storage, use our fall storage checklist for that separate job.
What size storage unit do you need?
For a compact desk with removable legs, a small armchair, and several stackable boxes, a 5×10 unit is a reasonable size to compare. It isn't a guarantee: measure the furniture, check the unit's door opening, and allow space to turn or retrieve items. If you're adding a sofa or pieces from a second room, compare a larger unit rather than assuming everything will stack.
Use the New River Storage size guide to narrow down your options. Label boxes on two sides, bag furniture hardware and keep it with the piece, and load the items you’ll bring home first near the door.
Does furniture need climate-controlled storage for a short stay?
It depends on what you’re storing. Consider climate control for upholstered furniture, solid wood pieces, electronics, and paper keepsakes, even if you only need the unit for a short time. Traditional drive-up storage can be practical for durable items when easier loading is the priority. Start with clean, dry belongings and ask the facility what its climate control includes. Our guide to items that may need climate-controlled storage can help you decide.
Can you rent a storage unit for just one month?
Month-to-month storage is worth checking if you only need the space through the holidays. Before booking, ask when the next payment is due, whether partial months are prorated, and how much notice you need to give before moving out. Also ask about any one-time charges or protection requirements so you can compare the total cost for the time you need.
Pick a tentative move-out date when you rent and put the notice deadline on your calendar. That makes it easier to bring the furniture back when the visit is over instead of paying for space you no longer need.
